British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
