Comeback Medvedev Wins First Title in Nearly 30 Months

19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament title decider.

The athlete, a former number one, has experienced a challenging period, managing just one match at the big events and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his service game in specific - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and eventually parting ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.

Presently working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently progressed in the past month - peaking in a hard-fought competitive victory over opponent Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's maiden championship since the Rome competition and initial on a hard surface since spring of that year.

Success also indicates he has won 21 championships at 21 distinct competitions.

"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my children simultaneously, so to win a title is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 the champion.

"This title is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my older daughter her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

His counter-punching approach and frequent reactions on court had prompted observers to question if his ability to compete at the highest level was concluded.

However the athlete has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and perform positively, supported by an improved service.

Medvedev fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging Moutet, taking 4 of the final five exchanges to take the lead.

The pair exchanged break points in the following set before Moutet, bidding for his initial tour title, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

Moutet rescued 4 initial chances in a competitive deciding set before the Russian broke to fifteen to close out the victory.

Fittingly, he earned the title with a rally at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to manage a volley after a lengthy match.
