Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
