Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
